Nature Conservancy of Canada
The Nature Conservancy of Canada is looking for volunteers to participate in a summer survey to identify the Prairie Plants found living on the Stony Mountain Prairie Preserve and to help out with a Spurge-pull (removal of the invasive species Leafy Spurge). The event will take place tomorrow, Saturday Aug.28th 9:00am to 1:00pm in Stony Mountain, just north of Winnipeg. The details of the event are listed on NCC’s Conservation Volunteer website but here’s the basic info: Leafy Spurge is an aggressive invasive weed species from Eurasia that has infested more than five million acres of land in the United States and the prairie provinces of Canada. It quickly establishes itself on grazing lands, degrades wildlife habitat, displaces sensitive species, and reduces biodiversity. Leafy Spurge has been found growing on NCC’s Stony Mountain Prairie Preserve, an 8 acre (3 hectare) property located 20 minutes north of Winnipeg within the town of Stony Mountain. A light lunch and refreshments will be available. Contact: Lisa McLaughlin, Nature Conservancy of Canada, 1-877-343-3532.
